Vulval Check

A vulval check assesses the external genital area to investigate symptoms such as itching, irritation, pain, skin changes or lumps. As different conditions can cause similar symptoms, specialist assessment can help identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment, with care tailored to relieve discomfort and support your daily wellbeing.

When the Service May Be Recommended

You should consider a consultation if you experience:

  • Persistent itching or irritation

  • Pain, burning, or discomfort in the vulval area

  • Skin colour changes or thickened skin

  • Lumps, cysts, or persistent sores

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Symptoms that do not improve with over-the-counter treatments

Early evaluation helps ensure timely diagnosis and effective treatment.

Common Vulval Conditions Treated

Mr Richard Flint provides specialist care for a wide range of vulval disorders, including:

Lichen Sclerosus

A chronic inflammatory condition that causes thin, white patches of skin, itching, and discomfort. Early treatment is important to prevent long-term complications.

Lichen Planus

An inflammatory disorder that can affect the vulval and vaginal tissues, causing soreness, irritation, and scarring if untreated.

Vulval Dermatitis and Eczema

Skin irritation caused by allergies, sensitivities, or contact with irritants, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation.

Vulval Pain (Vulvodynia)

Persistent vulval pain without an obvious cause, which may affect daily activities and sexual health.

Vulval Cysts and Lumps

Including Bartholin’s cysts, sebaceous cysts, and benign growths, which may require assessment or minor treatment.

Vulval Lesions or Skin Changes

Any unusual lumps, persistent sores, or changes in skin appearance should be carefully assessed to rule out more serious conditions.

What to Expect

Consultation

Mr Richard Flint will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any concerns to help determine the possible causes of your symptoms.

Procedure

A gentle examination of the vulval skin allows identification of inflammatory conditions, lesions, or structural changes.

Where appropriate, further tests may be recommended, such as:

  • Vulval skin biopsy

  • Swabs to rule out infection

  • Dermatological assessment of skin conditions

These tests help confirm a diagnosis and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis but may include:

  • Prescription topical medications for inflammatory skin conditions

  • Specialist creams or ointments to restore skin health

  • Treatment of infections where present

  • Minor procedures for cysts or benign lesions

  • Long-term management plans for chronic conditions

Many vulval conditions improve significantly with early and appropriate treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the examination be painful?

The examination is usually gentle, but touching skin that is sore or inflamed may feel uncomfortable. Let your clinician know about any tenderness or concerns beforehand. You can ask to pause or stop at any time.

Will I need a biopsy?

Not everyone needs a biopsy. A small skin sample may be recommended if the diagnosis is unclear or an area needs closer investigation. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin, and the sample is sent to a laboratory to help guide diagnosis and treatment.

Does a lump or skin change mean I have cancer?

No. Many vulval changes are caused by non-cancerous conditions, including irritation, cysts or inflammatory skin disorders. However, a new or persistent lump, ulcer or skin change should be assessed to identify the cause and determine whether treatment is needed.

When will I receive my results?

Your clinician will explain what they can tell from the examination during your appointment. If swabs or a biopsy are needed, results will follow once laboratory testing is complete. You will be told when to expect them and how any treatment or follow-up will be arranged.

Vulval conditions can be difficult to discuss, but they are common and highly treatable. Mr Richard Flint provides a professional and respectful environment where concerns can be discussed openly and managed with expert care.

If you are experiencing persistent vulval symptoms or skin changes, a specialist assessment can provide the reassurance and treatment you need.
